The YCCECE Student Orientation Day 2024 was held successfully on Friday, 23 August 2024. More than 100 students in Hong Kong attended the event.
This year's New Student Orientation, centred around the theme "Navigating New Horizons: Discover, Define, Develop," was crafted to guide incoming students through an engaging and transformative experience at the institution. "Navigating New Horizons" signifies exploring uncharted territories and embracing new opportunities for growth and learning. During orientation, students discovered the breadth of academic programmes, extracurricular activities, and support services available, empowering them to make informed decisions about their educational path. They defined their goals—both academic and personal—clarifying their aspirations and setting the stage for future achievements. Through interactive sessions and activities, students developed crucial skills, perspectives, and relationships that will contribute to their success throughout their academic journey and beyond.
Dr Lydia Chan, Chairlady of the College’s Council, gave a warm welcome to all attendants. She introduced the Yew Chung Yew Wah (YCYW) family and shared her own experiences growing up with the Yew Chung community. She highlighted the Yew Chung Approach she embraced in her preschool studies, as exemplified by the display of children's artwork at eye-level in an YCIS (Yew Chung International School) preschool classroom decades ago.
Dr Chan continued the Yew Chung story by drawing attention to the two sculptures on the Tin Wan campus. One features the YCYW founder, Hau Cheung PoPo, who was always present at the school gate at 7:30 am every day. The other, the Founder's Vision sculpture, underscores the purpose of Yew Chung Yew Wah in God's spirit, and is placed at the Kidsploration library.
Finally, Dr Chan shared that the College has received support from various members of the community, including a heartwarming letter and donation from the wife of a retired bus driver at YCIS. She encouraged everyone to love their neighbour as they love themselves, regardless of their future aspirations.
Professor Allan Yuen, President of the College, gave a welcome address, emphasising the importance of transformation and collaboration. He raised a question: “did you become who you are today?”. He encouraged students to live a meaningful college life, working seamlessly with others, and stressed that the attitudes of "knowing" and "listening" are key to success.
The student orientation gave participants the opportunity to make new friends and receive crucial information for starting their studies at the College. Warming-up activities in the afternoon included a virtual escape game, where students worked together as a team of archaeologists to navigate their way out of a jungle.
This orientation successfully equipped students with the tools and inspiration needed to navigate their collegiate experience with confidence and purpose. The College wishes every student the best in their studies and a fulfilling college life.
